I’m Emma, and over the course of the next 10 weeks I’ll be writing about Liberty University’s Student Government Association. I’ll be talking about what they do, how they’re doing it, and the people making sure it happens. I would love for you to join me as I take a deeper dive into this influential campus organization. But, before we begin, I think some introductions are in order!

The Basics

I am a journalism student at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, but I am originally from northcentral West Virginia, in a small town that’s never really felt that small to me. My nuclear family is small (consisting of myself, my older sister, and our parents), but I’ve grown up with lots of relatives close by, making my family feel so much bigger. A few fun facts about me: I love to read, I’ve traveled to more than 10 different countries, and when I was little I wanted to be either a stand-up comedian or a lawyer.

Why Journalism?

Obviously somewhere along the way I gave up my dreams of comedy or courtroom stardom and moved on to journalism. I’ve always loved writing, and I love being well informed about what’s going on around me. I have a natural curiosity and inquisitiveness that pushes me to go beyond what is plainly evident and uncover what lies beneath the surface. I highly value truth and honesty—values that it seems many of the voices in society today have viewed as secondary to popularity and pizzazz. Journalism provides me the opportunity to put my skills and values to work in ways that hopefully benefit others.

Why SGA?

Student government matters, perhaps more than students realize. Throughout my time here, I’ve seen the difference that SGA makes on campus. Sure, they’re the people you appeal to when you get a parking ticket, but they also work hard to improve campus living in ways both big and small. From adding bike racks to petitioning for more accommodating dining plans, SGA wants to make a difference for students. It offers students a chance to get involved and create change on our campus.

So What?

What does all of this have to do with you? This blog is my invitation to you to learn more about SGA and hopefully gain a different perspective about how student life on Liberty’s campus works. Join me this semester, and together we can take a closer look at our student government.
